In EYFS, the children follow the Mastering Number Program and this is used for daily planning. Teachers then supplement this with carefully designed activities within continuous provision and directed teaching. KS1 also undertake Mastering Number sessions, as an addition to their daily maths lessons, for their specific year groups to support with fluency. Additional daily fluency sessions, which focus on times tables and arithmetic are timetabled in KS2.

From year 1-6, we follow the DfE Curriculum Prioritisation materials. In the image below, each row represents a year group with year 1 on the top descending by year group to year 6 on the bottom row. Each colour represents a different area of maths so that the illustration shows how the children’s maths is heavily weighted towards number, place value, addition and subtraction in the younger years and progresses to topics including; fractions, decimals and percentages.

Due to the mixed-aged class structure at Willoughby, we teach KS2 maths in a year 3/4 two-year rolling programme and a year 5/6 two-year rolling programme. Units of work have been carefully mapped out to optimise learning. Geometry and statistics units are taught throughout the year on a weekly basis, when KS2 is taught as a whole.

Despite year 1 and 2 being in the same class, their maths input is taught separately to the relevant year groups. This is essential to ensure that firm foundations of mathematical knowledge are made in coherent steps.

Children have a log in to Times Tables Rockstars and are required to practise their times tables at home regularly as part of our homework expectations.
